Congratulations to our GHS Lady Gator Varsity Volleyball for defeating the Santa Rosa Warriors (3-0) and the Santa Maria Cougars (3-2) on Wednesday, August 9th. Amongst district and UIL updates and coaches expectations, awards and recognitions were also presented to our Coaches of the Year from our middle schools and high school teams. RGCGISD would like to give a special congratulations to our Grulla High School Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator Abel Gonzalez III for being announced as an inductee to the 2023 Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelina Hall of Fame. Coach Gonzalez played his stellar high school career at Rio Grande City High School from 1996-1998 where his talents led him to an athletic scholarship with the TAMUK Javelinas. During his time at TAMUK from 1999-2002, he passed for 5,448 yards and threw for 47 touchdowns while compiling over 7,371 total yards. A 2x All- Conference and All Regional quarterback, Coach Gonzalez was also selected as a finalist for the Harlan Hill Award for the best NCAA II player in the nation. Coach Gonzalez has been leading the Mighty Gators Football Team since 2010 in which they have amassed 11 playoff appearances, 1 district championship and 2 bi-district championships. The induction will be held on Feb. 16, 2024 at the Memorial Student Union Building at TAMUK. RGCGISD is extremely proud of the well deserved recognition by Coach Abel Gonzalez III. #RGCGISDproud

Our High Schools will be hosting several sports camps during the month of June 2023. Our RGCGISD Athletic Department held several TEP sessions on June 2-3 that covered the Principles of CPR/ First Aid/ AED and also certified those participants by the American Health & Safety Institute. Those in attendance worked with infant, child, and adult hands on scenarios which included our coaching staff who coach UIL sanctioned sports at GMS, RMS, VMS, RHS and GHS. UIL mandates certification or recertification for every athletic coach every two years. We thank Regina Dorfmeister for an excellent presentation preparing our staff for emergency scenarios to assist our student athletes during the athletic seasons in 2023-2024.
